Way back in the day—like in the late 1800s--Newcastle was one of the busiest coal mining towns in the Pacific Northwest, producing as much as 100 tons of coal a day. By the time the last coal mine closed in 1963, more than 11 million tons of coal had been extracted from the Newcastle area.

Jen Doak grew up in Newcastle, hiking in the coal mines and swimming in nearby Lake Boren. After college, Jen traded mines for wines. Her love for great food and wines eventually culminated with launching Brimmer & Heeltap in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood in 2013.

Jen is excited to come full circle and return to her Newcastle roots with The Coalman. Our goal is to provide a beautifully inviting space, a committed crew that cares deeply about our guests and enticing food, wine and cocktail selections.

By day, we’re your destination for incredible Italian-style pulled espresso and tasty morning bites. By night, the candles come out and we dial up the vibes with cocktails, wine and a delectable menu.

The Coal Miners
Hangover Cure

Newcastle coal miners were known to enjoy a drink or two after a long day in the mines.

“The Coalman” was the name of a rugged miner’s hangover cure. So, if you’re out of Alka Seltzer, try this old school recipe that will hit your head like a pick axe and is guaranteed to give your hangover the shaft.

  • Melt butter over hot water and stir in a spoon of Worcestershire sauce.

  • Add the same quantity of orange juice, a pinch of cayenne and a measure of port wine.

  • Pour over toast and let the mixture soak in before eating.

  • Get back to work, that coal isn’t going to mine itself!
